Duel Announce European Autumn Tour

27 August, 2017

Duel European Tour Poster

Duel is staying busy! The Texan hard-rockers will play 30 dates across 9 countries later this year, which is already their fourth European tour. The band is further on supporting its fantastic latest effort, Witchbanger. They’ll kick off the run of 30 shows in Pisa on November 10 and wrap up in Rome on December 9. You can check out the dates and details below.

Heavy Psych Sounds Records is happy to announce the upcoming repress of DUEL's sold out debut "Fears of the Dead". Their newly released album "Witchbanger" is still available here.

Hailing from the sun-baked lands of Austin, TX, DUEL is a heavy metal four-piece who casts hard-rocking spells of doom, blistering licks and horror from behind a thick haze of smoke. Formed by two ex-members of Scorpion Child and hugely influenced by the darkness of late 60's and early 70’s metal, these purists cut it right to the bone with heavy, deep grooves and blistering tunes.

After they released their well-acclaimed debut "Fears Of The Dead" in February 2016 on Heavy Psych Sounds, DUEL are back with their even more raging full-length, cheekily entitled "Witchbanger", due out April 28th, 2017. The album was produced and engineered by lead guitarist Jeff Henson at his Red Nova Ranch studio in the wastelands of Texas, not far from the historic Texas Chainsaw Massacre house. ~ Purple Sage PR

Honeymoon Disease - Electric Eel Single / Video

06 May, 2017

No comments:

The Swedish band Honeymoon Disease have unleashed their new music video for the vinyl seven-inch single Electric Eel. It was directed by Max Ljungberg and it's Honeymoon Disease's first new material since the release of their 2015 debut The Trancendencee. Electric Eel follows the typical Honeymoon Disease cadence of bombastic retro rock rooted in the classic sounds of the 70s. Another grand testament to the incredibly healthy state of Swedish retro rock.

Also, they’ll be back in studio this summer to record their next album. The new album is set for an early fall release on The Sign Records.

Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries Cover

Welcome to another issue of Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries. It's been a while since the last one. Maybe it should be renamed 'Monthly Bandcamp Discoveries'?... Heh... Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. I don't have a lot of free time lately and I don't expect things to change anytime soon. That's why this issue contains only eight entries. It's a mix of some recent discoveries, and some older material. This time you’ll find artists from France, Italy, USA, South Africa and Russia.

Black Rainbows -The Red Sky Above Single Cover

Black Rainbows is a tireless and dedicated band that has been making energetic stoner rock for more than 10 years. And in case you were busy on March 24th of this year, chances are you probably missed Black Rainbows’ new single entitled The Red Sky Above. It's a must have for anyone that enjoys good fuzzy stoner rock music.

This brand new song from BLACK RAINBOWS was recorded during their last tour in January 2017, in a cool studio surrounded by snowy mountains in the north of Italy. "The Red Sky Above" is six minutes of pure, fuzzy, groovy, stoner frenzy. With this new single, the trio shows a subtle shift toward a darker and heavier sound. "The Red Sky Above" is exclusively issued as part of the "Heavy Psych Sounds Sampler Vol. 2", available at this location.

Demon Head: Hic Svnt Dracones Video & Tour Dates

27 February, 2017

No comments:

Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Demon Head planted a flag for Danish vintage doom when they released their critically acclaimed debut, ‘Ride The Wilderness’ in 2015. Now, the band will release their second album ‘Thunder On The Fields’. It's coming out on April 7 through The Sign Records. Before then, the band has released a music video for the song 'Hic Svnt Dracones'. It's a marvellous track. At times it sounds like something between Pentagram and Danzig. Watch the video above.

HIC SVNT DRACONES is a heavy anthem with a burning drive. The song is about throwing off the shackles that wear us down, daring to go were the maps have white spots. Follow the sinister leads and groove to a place between borderland and underworld...

Demon Head got the "Fenriz band of the week" approval in january 2017 with the release of the bands first single 'Gallows Omen" from the upcoming album 'Thunder On The Fields'. Demon Head will tour UK, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and mainland europe upon the release.

Tour Dates
4/3 Copenhagen, DK. Ungdomshuset 10 years
31/3 Gothenburg, SWE
1/4 Linköping, SWE - The Sign Fest
7/4 Malmö, SWE - Release show
8/4 Copenhagen, DK - Release show
13/4 - 17/4 England Tour - Tour Dates TBA
28/4 Copenhagen - Nothern discomfort festival
11/5 - 14/5 Finland Tour - Tour Dates TBA

Superfang - King of the Mountain EP (2017)

20 February, 2017

1 comment:
Superfang - King of the Mountain EP Cover

Superfang is a fresh blues/stoner/retro rock band hailing from Norfolk, USA. The band was formed in 2013 by childhood friends Daniel Brunner and brothers Chris and Joey Hoffman. Finally, everyone can enjoy their music, because Superfang released their debut EP, King of the Mountain.

I'm quite pleased with this EP. It's good rock n roll with a cool bluesy sound here and there. Nice raw guitar and sound. King of the Mountain has a very 70's feel to it. In parts, it reminds me of early Pentagram and Cream, and at times I heard direct influences from the Black Keys. Something about the catchy melodies, the sound, the groove, the riffs, the energy. Like The Black Keys with the stoner rock touch. You get only four track, but at least there is not a bad song in the bunch.

In other words, it's a great record. Excellent new music on this first release of the band. King of the Mountain begins with the song Texas! and that alone is worth the price of the EP, but as you listen to each track you'll find it hard to pick a clear favourite, and you will also have trouble keeping your finger off the repeat button!

Welcome to my new series - Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries. The name is pretty self-explanatory. I'll be posting my Bandcamp discoveries every week. Here are 11 records from over the past two weeks that you should check out. From French stoner rock to Amercian black metal, here are some of the choicest records from around the world. Most of them deserve a separate review, but I just don't have the time to do that, so at least I can give'em some recognition.

Dope Default - Tales from the Wasteland (2017)

Dope Default - Tales from the Wasteland Album Cover

And that's all folks. I'm presenting you the last group from Greece, Dope Default from Thessaloniki. The band has just released their second EP called Tales from the Wasteland.

What awaits you is a throwback to 90s stoner/hard rock and grunge. The band draws their influences mainly from Monster Magnet with a little bit of Queens of the Stone Age and Corrosion of Conformity. Although Dope Default sounds a bit raw at first, each of the 6 songs on their extended play features some strong melodies paired with an almost manic dose of groove.

One or two songs didn't appeal to me, but overall a nice grungy stoner rock collection from a relatively new band. I definitely enjoy the EP. Check it out if mentioned bands are up your alley.

Mad John the Wise - Mad John the Wise EP (2014)

Mad John the Wise - Mad John the Wise EP Cover

And we are leaving Athens with this one, so I'm presenting you something a bit different. It's an old request that I finally managed to post. In case you were wondering, the request is of course not as old as the EP.

Mad John the Wise is a boiling pot of stoner, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative rock and elements of prog metal, like soft-hard dynamics, changing time signatures and tempos. The band uses heavy influences of folk and I would say even some sea shanties. All that gives them a quite interesting sound - intense and fragile at the same time.

I'm not a prog expert and am far removed from the scene, but to me these guys have it. Whatever 'it' is. Perhaps no one will be breaking down any doors to get it, but it's still a pretty good listen. Songs like The Hunt and Gatti Di Strada certainly makes Mad John the Wise worth downloading, especially it's a free name-your-price download.

Baetyl - Jangala EP (2016)

Baetyl - Jangala EP Cover

Apparently the beautiful Greek landscapes are inspiring enough to write and record great stoner/desert albums, because Greece gave us another fine release. After five years away, the stoner rockers from Athens jump back into the game rocking hard, with their second EP called Jangala, which was released December 4, 2016.

Jangala features the same laid-back groovy sound as on their debut EP Meteorite, which create a perfect low desert vibe, but this record seems generally faster. The sound can be loosely compared to Elvis Deluxe's and 1000mods' early work, so expect a really fuzzy and warm guitar tone, like a desert full of cactuses on the hottest day. The highlight of the record, of course in my opinion, is Last Song For A Migrating Bird. It has equal amount of psychedilic, slow-to-midpaced groove in addition to some faster and heavier moments. The vocals are not always spot on, but the singing is very catchy and enjoyable.

Maybe it's not an essential stoner rock album, but it's surely one that must be heard. My only complaint is the number of the songs. Four tracks are definitely not enough. I want more!

The Grim Gang - Introducing...The Grim Gang EP (2016)

The Grim Gang - Introducing...The Grim Gang EP Cover

The Grim Gang is a four-piece grunge / hard rock hailing from Richmond, Virginia. Although The Grim Gang's career is very new - they just released their first, three-song demo EP Introducing...The Grim Gang - it looks quite promising.

The highlight of the EP is certainly the first track, Troublemaker. With its heavy and raw 90's sound and fast, catchy rhythm, it's a powerful song which will make your muscles move without you noticing. Exactly what a grunge song should be. The second track, Willow Branch, is a slower, ballad-esque rocker in the vein of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. The last song is a pretty straight forward cover of Nirvana's Pennyroyal Tea.

I really enjoyed the first demo EP of The Grim Gang. They caught my interest and can't wait to see a full album. If you like what you hear, then head over to their bandcamp and grab a digital copy for more listening pleasure. Also be sure to support them by checking out their Facebook, Soundcloud and Twitter.

Roast - Roast EP (2016)

15 December, 2016

1 comment:
Roast - Roast EP Cover

The Los Angeles-based band recently released their first, self-titled EP. It has an awesome modern retro, heavy psych / traditional doom sound that reminds one of 1/3 Jimi Hendrix, 1/3 Pentagram and 1/3 Led Zeppelin. Damn, count me in!

It's bluesy, heavy, catchy, and full of crunchy riffs with a great bassist and fantastic drummer rocking along. Roast harkens back to the hard psychedelic rock of the late 60s and early 70s, and even early progressive rock. You simply get it all on this release: Leave Me Free is a crazy Purple Haze-esque track, Serpent shows us the doomy side of Roast and Gypsy Trip and Heavy Toll have a slower, blues-heavy feel.

If you like classic doom/blues, then this is a no-brainer. So do yourself a favour and don't waste another second, hit the buy it button, put your headphones on and float away to the sounds of Roast. You will not be disappointed!

The Legendary - Half A Devil Single / Video

It's gonna be Legen… wait for it… dary!

The Legendary from Munich is a heavy rock outfit that makes easy accessible stoner rock with the catchiness of Queens Of The Stone Age and the fun no-nonsense approach we know of Danko Jones.

The German Rock 'n' Rollers have premiered the official video for the new single Half A Devil from their upcoming album Let’s Get A Little High, which will be released in January 2017.

Electric Lady - Queen Of Electricity And Her Coming Kingdom (2016)

Electric Lady - Queen Of Electricity And Her Coming Kingdom Album Cover

Another month, another review. Let me present you some bands from more exotic places. Of course exotic from my European point of view. So no offense please.

Electric Lady is a retro rock band from Beijing, China...Wait, what? From China? Yeah, from China! Did you think there is no retro rock in China, huh? There is and it's pretty fucking good. Queen Of Electricity And Her Coming Kingdom is their debut album and it was released in January this year.

The band salutes to the early 70's and groups like Sir Lord Baltimore (there is a nice SLB cover on the album), Blue Cheer, Cream, Atomic Rooster, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Black Sabbath etc. This is female-fronted retro at it's most vintage. Already the first song grabs you immediately and takes the listener on a colourful trip of fuzz, psychedelic and hard rock. Great vocal stylings that recall the era too. Overall, the album has a classic rock feel that can't be faulted. From the sound to the atmosphere and production; everything just fits.

Another hidden gem in the world of retro rock. It may not be anything life-altering, mind-blowing, or Earth-shattering, but regardless, it is a very, thoroughly solid and enjoyable record from a promising young group. But if you've got an appreciation for old school heaviness or just dig good, solid heavy rock n' roll, Electric Lady is a must-have. I look forward to future release from this band.

Thermate - Off to Hades (2016)

17 September, 2016

Thermate - Off to Hades Album Cover

Thermate is a fresh five-piece band from the Finnish lake region, the city of Kuopio, to be precise.
"Off to Hades" is the band's first official EP; which feature four tasty songs, where the guys are paying homage to the seventies hard rock and the nineties stoner rock. That's always a good combination to start with. Just think of something between Graveyard, Radio Moscow and Dozer. Heavy rock with catchy melodies, parts of dry heat stoner and classic metal give all this that extra boost.
If you love organic desert jams with a touch of blues, Thermate should be a no-brainer. A fuzzy, dusty gem worth checking out!
