Welcome to the fifth issue of Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries. As you can see, time is still not on my side. I drift between projects like an Alzheimer’s patient, so it's some kind of small wonder that I am able to focus enough to even create this list. Also, sorry guys for not responding to your emails and messages lately. This instalment features a lot of recent discoveries (actually by 'recent discoveries' what I really mean is 'discoveries made over almost two months ago' xd) from countries like Germany, France, Russia, USA, Brazil and Venezuela.

Alastor - Black Magic (2017)

Saint Vitus once sang, White magic, black magic, which am I to choose? But Sweden's Alastor didn't have any doubts, they knew exactly what to choose for their debut EP.

Well, I just got done listening to about thirty-four minutes of music. That's, of course, nothing out of the ordinary, but this album/EP compresses that much music into just three songs. Luckily, Alastor makes the most of the time and delivers a quality EP. This is exactly the type of record where you pay no attention to song length, and just allow yourself to be entranced into Alastor's world. And I can guarantee you, you will not want to leave.

The guitar playing on here ranges from heavy-as-fuck doom metal to spacey, psychedelic sounding riffs and the vocals are sung in the background, like an old Black Sabbath record. These elements blend to create the incredible atmosphere of these tracks. The songs have an overall spooky, formidable tone and tomb-like mists that slip subliminally into the listener's ear.

The opener, Enemy, is well over eleven minutes and features a long, atmospheric Sleep-esque intro leading into the massive main riff. The song has good groove and powerful presence, supreme mini-solos, long solos and great clean vocals. The next song, Nothing To Fear, is straight to the point and full of energy. The end riff here is simply stunning. Impressive as the first two songs are, it's the third, Black Magic, where Alastor really shines. To be clear though, I can't turn Black Magic loud enough. This song will get stuck it your head for indeterminable amounts of time and there is nothing you can do about it. The title track opens with a bulky Weedeater-like riff, quickly opening into another Electric Wizard/Windhand-style riff. It's a truly freaked out song with mighty vocals and with some of the most epic, monolithic riffing you'll hear on the album.

Overall, Black Magic is nothing groundbreaking, but with it, Alastor has made an amazingly competent stoner doom album. It's fat and melodic in the right places. It will be stuck in your head for a while, I assure you that.

Bongzilla To Embark On 2017 European Tour

Bongzilla is ready to return on the stage: after announcing their long awaited reunion in 2015, and after playing some shows in 2015 and 2016, the stoner doom legend is about to embark on a month-long tour of Europe, which will see the group play over 30 shows. The band will perform their legendary Gateway in its entirety at Roadburn Festival!

Desertfest London 2017: Stage Times Announced For The Festival!

Get your notepads ready, as DESERTFEST LONDON have finally announced the stage times for their sixth edition, taking place April 28-30th in Camden!

It's finally that time of year; the last pit stop on the way to Desertfest 2017. We have those all important stage times at the ready. Were you worried about Steak clashing with Lowrider? Did you wonder if you'd be able to run to The Underworld for Samsara Blues Experiment after Sleep? Now you'll be able to answer all clash-based worries. To help planning your weekend, the festival put together a very helpful Clashfinder timetable.

Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries #2

Ready for a new portion of cool records? Once again, here are 11 records from over the past couple weeks, from French stoner metal to British black metal. As I mentioned last time, most of them deserve a separate review, but I just don't have the time to do that, so at least I can give'em some recognition. BTW. This issue of Stoner Mountain's Weekly Bandcamp Discoveries has been brought to you by the tag 'Heavy Psych'.

Dead Witches - Ouija (2017)

Dead Witches is the name of a new project from drummer Mark Greening, who is best known as one of the main members of Electric Wizard and Ramesses, who released a couple of legendary albums, and Psychedelic Witchcraft's vocalist Virginia Monti, with bassist Carl Geary and guitarist Greg Elk. Sadly, Greg passed away at the end of last year. Such a big loss, I corresponded with him a couple of times and he seemed like such a nice guy.

Ouija, recorded at the same studio in which Electric Wizard had recorded Dopethrone, only consists of five tracks plus an awesome, atmospheric introduction and it really leaves you wanting more, but at least all the songs are equally good. Yep, there is no bad song on Ouija! The first word that comes to mind after listening to this album is 'heavy'. It's a thrilling vintage-sounding production inspired by traditional doom metal, Electric Wizard-esque stoner doom and witchcraft. The band combines a monumental riffing attitude with psychedelic sounds.

Dead, the first track after the spooky intro, is a fantastic, groovy and psychedelic song with a hypnotic riff, trance-like drumming and a trippy solo at the end. The next track, Drawing Down The Moon, is true stoner insanity with a great riff and fantastic vocals. Virginia's voice and performance always appear to be great, but she surpassed herself with this one. The last three songs Ouija, Mind Funeral and A World Of Darkness are equally heavy and slow, with massive riffs to blow the pavement from the path you walk. Compared to them, Drawing Down The Moon almost sounds like some sort of pop-doom, even though it's still my favourite song from Ouija.

Let me just tell you that this record is tremendous. Maybe not original, but without a doubt a must to check out. Ouija is basically the 'groovy Electric Wizard album' I wish Electric Wizard had actually made instead of Time to Die. I promise you that as soon as you start playing Ouija, you don't wanna stop!

Ouija will be released on February 10 through Heavy Psych Sounds Records and it's now available for Pre-Order.

Desertfest London 2017 - Day Splits & Tickets Are Now Up!

The DESERTFEST LONDON 2017 day and stage splits are here, along with individual day tickets! Discover the highlights, venue details and the full list of bands that will grace Camden with their heavy riffs on April 28-30th.

Last things first, let's get straight to that insane Sunday main-stage. To celebrate The Roundhouse venue joining the Desertfest family, we made their debut appearance something special. Not only will stoner doom icons SLEEP be topping the bill, but the Roundhouse hosts a full bill of huge acts. CANDLEMASS, with over three decades of underground acclaim to their name, bring the epic doom metal. USA's WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM bring the atmospheric black metal. Traditional doom metal stalwarts SAINT VITUS bring the classic riffs. And how about this for a 'curtain jerker'? BONGZILLA bring the raw weed metal for their second show of the weekend; more on the first later.

It's not just about the Sunday though. Friday's stage at the Electric Ballroom is headlined by returning heroes SLO BURN whose short run in the mid 90s furthered the then fledgling stoner rock scene. One band they surely had an impact on is LOWRIDER, who play Europe's finest stoner rock alongside them. Ukraine's STONED JESUS celebrate their resonant album Seven Thunders Roar, and 1000MODS and PONTIAK round up the main stage on the Friday.

The Electric Ballroom on Saturday will be swarming with Turbojugends as death-punk grandmasters TURBONEGRO turn Camden into party central. JOHN GARCIA sticks around for a solo show, sure to feature classics from his years of nonstop mastery in the stoner rock scene. Sheffield's rock and roll five piece BLACK SPIDERS visit London for one last time on their farewell tour, with SATAN'S SATYRS and AVON rounding up the main stage.

As ever though, it doesn't stop at the main stages. Our regular partners have delivered three stages with diverse lineups. Human Disease Promo and When Planets Collide take over The Underworld on Saturday in a bill headlined by BONGZILLA with a special set celebrating the band's early work. The Quietus stage is led by synth wavers ZOMBI, and Nightshift Promotions bring an eclectic mix led by Hungary's APEY & THE PEA.

Telekinetic Yeti - Stoned and Feathered Video

Epic stoner metal/stoner doom is at the core of the duo Telekinetic Yeti, whose first full-length album is coming out march 2017, through Sump Pump Records. Sleep Announced To Headline Desertfest London 2017

The final headliner has been announced for Desertfest London 2017, and it's Sleep! The stoner metal pioneers return to Desertfest London to headline the Roundhouse venue on Sunday 30th April, 2017. Sleep is to join acts such as Slo Burn, Candlemass, Turbonegro and Lowrider. Who would have thought just 10 years ago that this lengendary bands would be playing together.

After conquering Koko in 2015, SLEEP are back at Desertfest; this time to reign at the Roundhouse. That’s right, not only did the festival bag seminal doom legends Sleep to headline their sixth edition, but the Desertfest crowd will also be descending on the iconic Roundhouse for the whole of the Sunday.

Bands already confirmed for DESERTFEST LONDON 2017 are Turbonegro, Slo Burn (exclusive U.K. performance), Candlemass, Lowrider, Black Spiders, Samsara Blues Experiment, The Picturebooks, Satan's Satyrs, 1000Mods, Yuri Gagarin, Vodun, Pigsx7, The Well, Mammoth Storm, Stubb, Wucan, Venimous Maximus, Elephant Tree, Grave Lines...

Dead Witches Announce Release Date and Artwork for Debut Album, ‘Ouija’

Dead Witches have just announced that they’ll be releasing their long-awaited debut album, Ouija, on February. 10, 2017. The album will be available on Black vinyl, LTD Purple vinyl, CD and digital. With that news also comes a really cool cover art for the album, which can be viewed above.

Drummer Mark Greening (former Electric Wizard, also of Ramesses and With The Dead) and vocalist Virginia Monti (Psychedelic Witchcraft) joined forces to found the heaviest occult psych superbeast to see the light this year: DEAD WITCHES. Coming as a nice surprise for fans of the aforementioned bands and more generally, of crushing psychotropic doom, the formation of this supergroup led to the high anticipation of their debut album, which details were just revealed today. - PURPLE SAGE PR

Purple Kong - Purple Kong EP (2016)

Purple Kong's self-titled three-track, debut EP is possibly my favourite three-track EP, since...Major Kong's Brave New Kong. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. You can download their EP for free via their Bandcamp page. Of course, I encourage you to pay a couple bucks to support the band.

Purple Kong is a stoner doom power trio, hailing from London's underground metal scene. With heavy drums, crushing guitar riffs, thumping low bass, clean powerful vocals and lyrics as dark as their sound, I believe they'll soon get a lot more attention. Their music is heavily influenced by Black Sabbath and Sleep, a wild rampage of 70s proto-metal guitar riffs and distortions. All songs have this awesome Sleep's Sonic Titan vibe. Especially the song Cocaine Pentagram, which is definitely one of my favourite tracks of the year.

Their debut EP is not to be missed. Great stuff created in a classic vein. I hope they make a full-length album soon because I want more!

Grajo - Grajo (2016)

Speaking of killer albums, here is another great hidden gem fronted by a woman with a fascinating and beautiful voice! Grajo is a Space/Stoner/Doom band from Córdoba, Spain. Their debut album came out in May, but I discovered it just two weeks ago. If you guys already knew it... Why didn't you tell me before!?

These guys have a really groovy Saint Vitus-esque vibe around their sound. Combine this with mountainous riffs and you're in for a ten-ton trip. Yes, it's heavy, but very melodic at the same time, with mesmerising dreamy vocals. A perfect combination, very refreshing. Trust me, you'll get addicted in no time. My favourite songs on this album are Magic Eye, Feeding Our Demons and I Am The Sea Still, but you can't go wrong with all the mighty jams on here.

Superb album by a great new band. I would highly recommend this album to every doom fan out there. Very easy to listen from start to finish. This is just another 2016 favourite of mine. In constant rotation in my home!

Haunted - Haunted (2016)

WOW! A massive, killer album. Yep, I've said it. This is exactly how I want to start this review and what are you gonna do about it? From a beautiful city called Catania in Italy comes Haunted, a heavy five-piece, doom metal band. Their self-titled debut album was just released at the turn of August/September through Twin Earth Records, so it is still fresh. I've found a new band to obsess over and obsess I shall.

I just started listening to Haunted and I was immediately blown away. Think of it as Electric Wizard teaming up with Pentagram adding female vocals, a dark, doomy sound played in a funky, rockin' psychedelic way. I'm just addicted to their overall sound and the catchiness of each of their songs. From the hauntingly beautiful vocals to the monolithic riffs. This is exactly how we want all of our records to sound like. The buildup on this album is amazing, not just in the songs themselves or the song lengths, but the entire record. Absolutely great tunes.

I think this is currently one of Italy's finest offerings if you're looking for stoner doom jams. Adding this to the 2016 biggest surprises from the underground! An essential newcomer, highly recommended. Don't take my word for it, just get this album and play it loud!

Never Before - King of Worms (2016)

Ok, we are still in Beijing, China. So now I want to introduce you to the next band from that city. Nevere Before is a stoner/doom metal band and it's also a debut album this time.

King of Worms is a great album on which this band showcases their Down inspired sound in a beautiful way. You can also hear some Corrosion of Comformity and Church of Misery influences. Bluesy sludge riffage and solid grooves. A more uptempo, crossover style of sludge, doom and stoner metal. These guys are really tapped into their collective talent. They sound tight, but still make it come off like a it's a great jam session. I would recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a more versatile and clean sound in the genre. Also if you like your sludge to be more than just riffs being dragged through a swamp.

For Never Before, a rising band in the genre, their debut is one that definitely succeeds. And the more you listen the better it gets. Get this now and play it damn loud!

Siracvsa - Judah... The Holy Beginning Single

Siracvsa is a Sao Paulo-based stoner doom metal band. Listen to their new single/promo song from upcoming full lenght album. Loud, slow and thick doomy riffage. Nothing quite new here, but well done nonetheless. This band clearly knows what they are doing. Give 'em a shot!

Kannabinõid - Troon (2016)

Sorry for the delay. But I guess it's never too late to take this awesome trip.

Kannabinõid is a stoner/doom power-trio from Tallinn, Estonia, formed in 2009. This is their debut full-length album (there's also an EP from 2012), presenting 3 songs of atmospheric stoner doom. Highly influenced by Sleep/ Om with a heavy focus on epic, monolithic riffs. It's slow, raw, pounding and heavy. A formula that works like a charm when done correctly. A great release for lovers of slow, sludge infested doom. Check it out, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Back to Croatia and one of my favourite stoner rock scene. Umor are from Zagreb, Crotia. They describe themselves as loud and heavy atmospheric rock/metal band with stoner and doom influences. I love their split with Cojones (another great Croatian band) back in 2007 and I was listening to it everyday for a very long time. This EP almost as good as that Split. Highly recommended!
